These three motifs guide how the site looks. They are not three tiers of Chinese music, and no single motif describes the whole tradition.
Start with an instrument
All instruments
Guqin古琴
A seven-stringed Chinese zither, plucked with the right hand while the left hand stops the strings or touches them to sound harmonics.
Entries are linked by explained relationships, not a flat list of tags. From Guqin you can move straight to what it uses:
Open-string notes (san)散音
Notes produced on the guqin by plucking a string that the left hand does not stop, giving the instrument's deep, resonant low register.
techniqueStopped-string notes (an)按音
Notes produced when the left hand presses a guqin string down onto the soundboard, shortening the vibrating length and changing the pitch.
techniqueHarmonics (fan yin)泛音
Bell-like notes produced on the guqin by lightly touching a string at a nodal point while the right hand plucks it.
cultureLiterati Qin Culture文人琴文化
The association of the guqin with Chinese scholars, poetry and self-cultivation, especially from the late imperial period onward.
instrumentGuzheng古筝
A long plucked Chinese zither with metal strings tuned by pegs on the top board, used for home entertainment, folk music and court ensembles.
